Mediasuite Online: Annotations > Manually Calibrate Images

Follow

In some cases it is necessary to manually calibrate images in Mediasuite.  There are several reasons for this to be done, including:

  • The capture process does not pass the calibration information back to Mediasuite

  • An imported image does not have the correct calibration, this is normal for imported images

There are three options in Mediasuite to manually calibrate an image in Mediasuite

  1. Calibrate Image by Line:
This option uses a straight line of known length, this is the most used method.

    1. Double click on the required object in the left part of the screen  (The object will be present in the screen)

    2. Go to Tools menu > Annotations > Calibrate Image by Line

    3. To draw line: single left click to start, drag to end point, single left click to terminate

      1. This method requires you to know the length of selection in the image

      2. Greater precision can be achieved by zooming in to the image

    4. This shows what Mediasuite thinks is the length of the line i.e. 7.7 mm (inches can be selected from the dropdown if preferred)

    5. If the correct length is known (e.g. 3.4 mm), click into in the Length field and enter manually

    6. Click OK

      1. When the calibration has been manually set, it is remembered for this image

      2. The calibration can be re-specified at any time

  2. Calibrate Image by Polyline
This option uses a multi segment line of known length, this is not usually used

    1. Double click on the required object in the left part of the screen  (The object will be present in the screen)
    2. Go to Tools menu > Annotations > Calibrate Image by polyline
    3. To draw a multi segment line: left click to start, drag to a mid-point, left click, drag to next mid-point & left click, etc., drag to end point and double left click to terminate
      1. This method requires you to know the length of something in the image
      2. Greater precision can be achieved by zooming in to the image
    4. This shows what Mediasuite thinks is the length of the line (i.e. 8.9 mm, inches can be selected from the dropdown if preferred)

    5. If the correct length is known (e.g. 5.9 mm) it is entered

    6. Click OK

      1. When the calibration has been manually set, it is remembered for this image

      2. The calibration can be re-specified at any time

  3. Calibrate Image by Resolution
This option is used when the resolution of the image is known

    1. Double click on the required object in the left part of the screen  (The object will be present in the screen)

    2. Go to Tools menu > Annotations > Calibrate Image by resolution

    3. The resolution can usually be found in the device’s user manual, beware that if the device has multiple resolutions to use the correct one

    4. There are three options:

      1. Pixels size, µm (pixel size in micrometres, 1 µm is equal to 0.001 mm)

      2. Pixels per mm

      3. DPI (dots per inch)

      4. Select the option and measure to be used, e.g. Pixel size = 30 µm

    5. Click OK

      1. When the calibration has been manually set, it is remembered for this image

      2. The calibration can be re-specified at any time

      3. When the resolution is set, either by default or altered, all three settings will reflect equivalent values based on the one used.
For example, after making the change above the three values are:

        These are equivalent resolutions.
